A Native American leader of the Shawnee, Tecumseh is known for resisting the transfer of land, a concept which he knew to be incompatible with Indigenous tradition.

‘Sell a country!’ Tecumseh exclaimed. ‘Why not sell the air, the clouds, and the great sea? Did not the Great Spirit make them all for the use of his children?’ When war broke out in 1812 between Britain and the United States, Tecumseh sided with the British in Canada.
