Atop the shield are two hands  – one naked, the other in armour – surmounted by thistle and laurel, symbolizing Scotland and Peace. A British royal unicorn supports the shield on the left side while a dignified First Nation chief supports the right.

The bouquet of Mayflowers (the official flower of Nova Scotia) was added to the Bearings in 1929.

The Motto, “Munit Haec et Altera Vincit,” translates as ‘One Conquers and the Other Defends.’
