Three women — all named Mary in the Gospels — visit Jesus’ tomb the morning after the crucifixion and are told “He is Risen” by an Angel. The long blonde hair of Mary Magdalene is traditionally her identifying attribute.
The New Testament gives the name Mary to several women, some of whom have at times been thought to be the same person:
Mary, the mother of Jesus.
Mary Magdalene His dear friend
Mary of Bethany (Luke 10:38–42; John 12:1–3)
Mary (mother of James the Less) (Matthew 27:56; Mark 15:40; Luke 24:10)
Mary of Cleopas (John 19:25)
