The four Gospel writers are honoured in the four tall transept windows. The central image in these roundels was the only hand-painted glass in the window. The decorative black and white edges shown here were applied using stencils before firing. The gold-coloured background provided a warm glow in thousands of North American churches. The technique of mass producing gold-coloured ‘marbleized’ glass was developed by Louis Comfort Tiffany, and imitated by many companies.
