In 1534, Jacques Cartier was commissioned by King Francois I to sail from Saint Malo in northern France, heading west in hope of discovering a Northwest passage to Asia. During that expedition he explored the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and encountered friendly Indigenous natives.

In June of 1534 he planted a cross on the Gaspe peninsula, claiming the land for France and initiating the first European colony in Canada.
