Although it is not stained glass as such, the elaborate decorative quality of this huge skylight is in the spirit of both functionality and beauty, the dual role which windows have played since ancient times. The use of bronze reflects humanity’s age-old fascination with the decorative possibilities of light within a building. In Roman times, “torchieres”–basins filled with burning oil–illuminated the imperial palaces.
