The new building – designed in the early 1970s by Etienne Gaboury – sits like a tabernacle within the ruins of the stone cathedral of 1906. The old stone walls hold tombs of bishops who served at the cathedral. The grave of Louis Riel, the legendary nineteenth-century rebel and founder of the province of Manitoba is nearby.
